Teaching Poetry Through the Music of Tupac Shakur

In this informational presentation with discussion, participants will learn how to incorporate modern rap music into their traditional poetry lessons. Poetry is traditionally a difficult concept for Middle School/High School students, but this project will peak their interest by involving a popular music choice with a traditional literature form in poetry. Participants will take home a greater understanding of the depth of figurative language and symbolism within Tupac’s songs and be able to teach a poetry lesson entirely from his music. Participants will analyze the songs “Keep Ya Head Up” and “Do For Love” while focusing on overarching themes in Tupac’s music as well as discuss different types of figurative language present and how they affect the meaning of his music.

Let's Gogh Crazy

During the session, teachers will “Gogh” crazy with ideas for integrating Vincent Van Gogh’s work into all aspects of the regular curriculum. Teacher’s will “Gogh” through the process of one sample math and language integrated lesson. As we work through this session, teachers will create a “Gogh” to lesson that can easily be integrated into any classroom. In this lesson, you will create a replica of his famous oil painting, Sunflowers, using construction paper. Each component of the replica has a specific measurement corresponding to a rubric that can be modified using your own curriculum. After completing the art component of this lesson, you will use figurative language by creating and writing as many examples of similes, metaphors, idioms, or hyperboles using your piece of art. There will also be a discussion about how this unit can be expanded to integrate all subject areas overtime. During the discussion, we will “Gogh” through several pieces of his work and give suggestions as to how they can be implemented into your classroom. You can expect to “Gogh” back to your school with a plethora of resources ready to use immediately. You and your students will “Gogh” crazy over this unit!

Participants will experience an arts integration lesson combining art prints and tableaux to teach historical, scientific, and technical texts. In this lesson, students are given a text (either historical, scientific, or technical text) to read and analyze. Students are then given an art print that correlates with the text. Students analyze the art print to determine connections that can be made to the text in order to enhance their understanding of the text. Students then create a tableaux to show the main idea of the text with connections to the art print. Students then present their tableaux along with the art print using the "spotlight" method within the tableaux to showcase specific information found within the text to show whether historical, scientific, or technical text was being used.

Creating a Makerspace in your Classroom is a hands-on workshop that will address how teachers can promote inquiry-based learning by providing a makerspace in their classroom.  We will explore guidelines for making a makerspace and how to create one on a limited budget.  Educators will also go through a makerspace activity using the design cycle and prompt cards.

Teaching Poetry Through the Music of Tupac Shakur

In this informational presentation with discussion, participants will learn how to incorporate modern rap music into their traditional poetry lessons. Poetry is traditionally a difficult concept for Middle School/High School students, but this project will peak their interest by involving a popular music choice with a traditional literature form in poetry. Participants will take home a greater understanding of the depth of figurative language and symbolism within Tupac’s songs and be able to teach a poetry lesson entirely from his music. Participants will analyze the songs “Keep Ya Head Up” and “Do For Love” while focusing on overarching themes in Tupac’s music as well as discuss different types of figurative language present and how they affect the meaning of his music.

O'Keeffe's Flowers

Participants will learn color shading and composition using oil pastels to create their own flowers in the style of American artist, Georgia O’Keeffe.   Participants will explore the artwork of Georgia O’Keeffe while gaining understanding realism vs. abstraction.  Teachers will learn how to make connections to science and poetry in context with the art lesson.

Paper Quilling: From Quaint to Quirky

Quilling or paper filigree is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs.  Participants will learn the basic techniques of quilling. They will also learn the centuries long history of this obscure art form and how its making a comeback in the contemporary art scene. Participants will leave with two ready-to-implement lessons (complete with directions & assessment tools) along with their own paper quilled artwork.

Snowmen at Night Collages

We will begin this lesson by reading the story, Snow Friends, by M. Christina Butler and Tina Macnaughton. Then, we will discuss all the story elements within the story and how the characters became close friends by building a snowman together. We may also refer to several other snowman books including, The Biggest, Best Snowman, Snowmen at Night, and Snowman Magic. Then, we will brainstorm various ideas of how we would want to create our very own character from the story, a snowman and write a desciptive sentence about the snowman character.

The Process: Participants will practice painting, drawing, coloring, cutting, and gluing skills. They will learn the processes of wet on wet painting, blending pastels, collaging processes, and showing depth through overlapping shapes. Art vocabulary terms include line, form, texture, light/dark colors, horizontal/vertical, and perspective.
